Fault 01

Microwave runs but doesn't heat

Severity: high

Symptoms to look for

  • Plate rotates and light is on, but food stays cold
  • Normal sound but no heating
  • Very weak, insufficient heating
  • Heats sometimes, not at other times

Likely causes

  • Magnetron (the heart of the microwave) has failed
  • High-voltage transformer is weak or burned
  • Diode or capacitor has failed
  • Control board sending faulty signals

How we fix it

We test the magnetron with specialized gauges (it's dangerous — very high voltage), probe the transformer and electronics, and replace the faulty component with a genuine one.

Fault 02

Internal sparking or crackling

Severity: critical

Symptoms to look for

  • Blue or white sparks inside the cavity
  • Loud crackling while running
  • Faint burning smell
  • Unusual flashes inside the cavity

Likely causes

  • Waveguide cover is damaged or burned
  • Internal cavity wall has damage
  • A metal item was placed inside (spoon, foil)
  • Burnt food residue caked on the walls

How we fix it

We inspect the waveguide cover and replace it with a genuine part, deep-clean the cavity, and verify the electronics to make sure the sparks didn't damage anything else.

Fault 03

Turntable won't rotate

Severity: medium

Symptoms to look for

  • Plate stays still while microwave runs
  • Plate turns slowly or with difficulty
  • Rattling sound under the plate
  • Food heats unevenly

Likely causes

  • Turntable motor has failed
  • Plastic ring under the plate is broken
  • Roller wheels are missing or damaged
  • Drive coupler is worn

How we fix it

We test the turntable motor, replace the ring and rollers if needed, and reseat the plate. A relatively straightforward repair.

Fault 04

Display dead or showing error codes

Severity: high

Symptoms to look for

  • Display is completely off while microwave runs
  • Error codes shown (F1, F2, F3, SE…)
  • Buttons are unresponsive
  • Timer or clock doesn't work

Likely causes

  • Control board needs repair
  • Ribbon cable to the display disconnected
  • Internal thermal sensor fault
  • Moisture or grease ingress on the board

How we fix it

We read the code from Smeg's service manual, probe the board with electronic diagnostic tools, and repair or replace the affected part.

Fault 05

Door won't close or microwave won't start

Severity: critical

Symptoms to look for

  • Door doesn't close firmly
  • Microwave won't start even after closing
  • Clicking sound when shutting the door
  • Door pops open mid-cycle

Likely causes

  • Electronic door switch has failed
  • Door hinges have weakened
  • Plastic latches are broken
  • Door sensor sending faulty signals

How we fix it

We inspect the door switch system (usually 2–3 internal switches) and replace any faulty ones with originals. A microwave has multiple safety interlocks to prevent open-door operation.

Average repair cost From EGP 1,200
Fault 06

Cavity light not working

Severity: medium

Symptoms to look for

  • Interior lamp is off while microwave runs
  • Lamp flickers on and off
  • Cavity is dark during heating
  • Lamp is visibly burnt out

Likely causes

  • Lamp needs replacement
  • Light switch has failed
  • Fault in the lamp circuit
  • Weak lamp socket connection

How we fix it

We fit a lamp specifically rated for microwave cavities (not a household bulb — it has to survive heat and radiation). If it's a circuit issue, we repair the switch or wiring.

Why the authorized center is the right choice for Smeg microwave service

A microwave runs at very high voltage and produces radiation — an untrained technician can hurt themselves or endanger you.

Authorized service partner of Smeg Italy
01

Technicians trained in microwave safety

A microwave's HV transformer can hit 2,000–4,000 volts — far above home mains. Our technicians are trained to handle the voltage and radiation safely.

03

Specialized radiation meters

After every microwave repair, we measure leakage with a calibrated meter to confirm it's within safe limits.

Result Proof that the microwave is safe for your family.
04

Warranty backed by Smeg

The warranty is printed on an official invoice and backed by Smeg Egypt.

Result Your rights are protected.
05

Eliminating post-repair risks

Important warning

A microwave can be extremely dangerous if repaired incorrectly.

  • The HV transformer holds a lethal charge even after unplugging
  • An untrained technician can suffer fatal shock
  • Radiation leakage damages skin and eyes over time
  • A bad repair can lead to magnetron rupture

At the authorized center, every step follows strict safety procedures.

01 Why does my Smeg microwave run but leave food cold?

The usual culprit is a failed magnetron — the component that generates the heating waves. Symptoms: normal operation with the plate rotating and the light on, but no heat; continuous weak heating; or intermittent heating. Magnetrons can't be repaired, only replaced. The technician will tell you honestly whether repair or replacement makes more sense.

02 What do sparks inside the microwave mean?

This is an emergency — stop the microwave immediately. Causes: a burnt waveguide cover (most common), metal left in the cavity, or charred food residue. Don't use it again until a technician checks it — the sparks can damage the magnetron or start a fire.

03 Why does a built-in Smeg microwave cost more to service?

Built-ins require careful extraction from the cabinetry without damage; rear-side access is harder than on countertop units; built-in models tend to be newer with more advanced tech; and reinstallation needs precise calibration. Simple issues (waveguide cover, lamp) are handled without a full removal.

04 Can a microwave leak radiation?

A healthy microwave is protected by strict safety systems. Leakage can occur if the door doesn't seal, the gasket is worn, the glass is cracked, or after a non-specialist repair. We measure leakage with a calibrated meter after every repair. Never use a microwave with a door that won't close properly.

05 What should I never put in a microwave?

Absolutely forbidden: any metal (spoons, forks, foil, gold-rimmed plates), eggs in shell (they explode), non-microwave-safe plastic, fully sealed containers, whole un-pierced fruit. Correct use extends the microwave's life by many years.
